PAINTING on denim is not new for Glebe artist Nafisa Naomi, who has been brushing up on a pair of motorcycle legend Wayne Gardner’s old jeans. Her vivid transformation of the much-loved denims will be among 15 specially painted jeans being auctioned later on July 26 to raise funds for research into childhood diseases. Last year the talented inner-city artist painted the jeans of Hollywood actor Anne Heche for the Jeans for Genes art auction which raises money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. This year’s project was a huge undertaking for Nafisa who had undergone a knee operation the week before and had to kneel down to work on the oversized canvas that the jeans were part of. Wayne’s jeans will be up for auction alongside those of other sporting greats at the art auction, a gala black tie dinner at Darling Harbour Convention Centre South.
